One evening last week, some 200 people gathered on the roof of a shopping centre in a small town in the southern Indian state of Kerala to watch 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a gripping 2007 film on the last days of Communist rule in Romania.

"It was very well received by the audience, as most of our movies are," Anoop Kumaran of the eponymous Kodungallur Film Society, one of Kerala's 60-odd film clubs, told me.

I V SASAI…the great film maker, painter passed away today. The most valuable legend from Malayalam film industry became a still behind the frames of memories. He was considered as one of the best director from Malayalam who did numerous of films in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi genres from 1970s to 1990s. I had a deep connect with him as I recall those my early days that of fulfilling my Film Dreams. In 2001 during my Mathrubhumi days I wanted a headstart in film industry with my writings and short stories. My meeting with mr. I V Sashi was chnaced upon by our friend Mr. Shafeel (Producer). With beautiful welcome smile he inquired into my base in artistry and read my script fully. After reading the script he hugged me and fueled me with these words: “One day you will became the best film maker..I found some sharp observations in your script” these words were no less than an Oscar for me. That was my ever first attempt in film industry and He is the first person who read my script and valuated me. Today doing my first movie after 17 years of our meeting, i m heart broken that i couldn't complete the movie and take Sashi sirs blessings. Fate has played a dirty game against me, just a month before its completion, my first motivator in the industry is on a journey into the depths of everyones heart...... Sasi Sir…..I need your blessings….

Litla Dimun

Melbourne International Film Festival

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) recently unveiled their complete program and boy is it a doozy. Spanning 17 days in August and featuring over 300 feature films, MIFF is Australia’s largest and oldest film festival.

On top of their earlier – First Glimpse and Cannes – announcements, the program is packed with exciting events from the opening night Australian premiere of musical The Sapphires to the closing night premiere of P.J. Hogan‘s (Muriel’s Wedding) latest, Mental, which stars Toni Collette and Anthony LaPaglia. Other anticipated Australian features include Save Your Legs, a Bollywood cricket comedy with Stephen Curry and Brendan Cowell, and 100 Bloody Acres, a local horror pic with Angus Sampson.

American film-maker and comic Bobcat Goldthwait will be a guest of the festival presenting his latest black comedy, God Bless America, while Benh Zeitlin, director of what looks to be the best film of 2012, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, is also visiting.

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2012

Margaret

Shot in 2005, this film was left on the shelf of the distributor and swung round between various interested parties for many years. Director Kenneth Lonergan, whose debut feature, You Can Count on Me, is a true contemporary masterpiece of independent cinema and immediately preceded Margaret, went to great lengths to bring his project to the screen and eventually relented to produce a version far shorter than his original vision. The distributors, for their part, were not entirely satisfied with the final product, a full 150 minutes long, but this version has now finally made it to the festival circuit and Karlovy Vary is a great platform to test this version.

Margaret is, if not a brilliant piece of cinema, at least another affirmation of Lonergan’s talent as a screenwriter and artist of human emotions. His films take rather difficult subject matter and thoroughly investigate the human components of the story in intimate collaboration with extremely gifted actors.Margaret reunites him with Mark Ruffalo and Kieran Culkin from You Can Count on Me, but the performances he elicits from Anna Paquin, J Smith-Cameron and Allison Janney, in the latter’s only scene in the film, are breathtaking.

The film uses the anger in the face of September 11 as a backdrop to a bus accident that Paquin is responsible for when she waves at a bus driver and he runs over a woman on the street, killing her almost instantly. The teenager Paquin is from a broken home and is exploring her rebellious side, not unaware of her sexuality. Over the course of the film, she steamrolls many men in her life, and many women, including her mother, are also terribly hurt.

A good companion piece to The Squid and the Whale, Margaret has an arrogant young protagonist who is immature even as she verbally abuses many people around her, breaking hearts and testing their patience. It’s not always easy to watch, but Lonergan finds raw emotion in the everyday details of New York City that are dark but not without hope.

The title refers to a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Slater Brothers Entertainment’s Hamilton International Film Festival (HIFF), founded by brothers Wade, Grant and Todd Slater, whose father, Terry Slater, was the head hockey coach at Colgate University for 15 years, is returning to Hamilton for a 4th year with an impressive all star line up of films, charity themed events and parties. This year’s festival is set to take place Aug. 2 to 5.

The brothers’ efforts to bring back top international films, award-winning directors, and academy award winners are based on their desire to expand the arts and film awareness in Central New York. This year’s festival also has screenings dedicated to organizations and charities close to the brothers’ hearts, including Thursday night’s screening of the film, “Undefeated,” where 100 percent of proceeds will be dedicated by SBE to Hamilton Central School.

Through the Film Festival, the Slaters aim to bring a piece of Hollywood back to the area they proudly grew up in and provide a platform to recognize local area talent and advance the careers of aspiring filmmakers. Supported by the town of Hamilton and Colgate University, this year’s festival will have some of the biggest filmmakers and entertainment companies in attendance. The first film will be screened at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at the Hamilton Theater and events will continue throughout the weekend, capped off with a festival closing night party and guest DJ at the newly renovated Colgate Inn in downtown Hamilton.

MANIPUR - LAND OF BEAUTY

 Manipur is a beautiful place situated in the northeastern side of India. This beautiful land of hills is situated in between the Indian states NAGALAND and some north of Mizoram. IMPHAL is the capital of the Manipur. All the people are talking the language Manipuri, which considered to be the regional language of India. Usually, people like to speak Manipuri other than Hindi, India’s national language. Beside, many of the ordinary people can talk English also very beautifully.

Manipur is considered to be a sensitive border state of India. Because of this, you can see, Indian army is still having their power to Manipur. Yet, Manipur is suffering some insurgency problems and other political issues which related to the social as well as communal situation of the state. While travelling to Manipur, you can reach by train, flight or by bus. While travelling through train, if you are coming from south, you can come to GUWAHATI and take bus to IMPHAL. But nearest railway station to Manipur, is DIMAPUR, which is situated in NAGALAND. From there you can take a Winger traveler or bus to IMPHAL. While, choosing air, you can get flight direct to IMPHAL. Most of the well-known air services are there with their domestic flights.

In Imphal, you can see an ordinary and simple life. This is not a place with luxurious life. Most of the people are living with farming rise, onion, banana etc. Some of them are taking interest in Cow farming. In Imphal city you can see only one over bridge. There are very few Film theaters are there. Most of the day to day routines may close by 6 pm. After 7 pm you can’t get anything from the street. Here very few bus services are there. Mostly here running is autos and winger type travelers. The main attractive of the Manipur is their physical appearance and dressing. Usually men have kurthas and pijamas. But ladies are wearing a sheet.

MANIPUR is a land of beauty. But this is not a tourist place. Very few peoples are coming as tourists. Most of them are coming for the trade of Tea, Coffee and other things. Here is a fort called KAGLA fort made by the king of Manipur several years back. It is situated in the heart of the city of Imphal. 

My Puppy and Me

When I was at the age of five or six, I had a puppy named Chinthu.  

I was a single child and since both my parents were working, I had only one companion at home in my leisure times, that was Chinthu.  So I loved him so much that we were together when I play, when I bath, when I eat and when I sleep.

My family lived in a house just near the high way.  

One day when I was indoor with my mother, we heard a moan outside.  We ran out to see our Chinthu on the floor.  Our neighbor was running in to tell us that it was a hit and run case.  We were stunned for a moment.  Then we examined Chinthu carefully.  He was unconscious.  No serious injuries were visible instead of a small wound just above his left eyebrow.

We called him by name.  But he didn’t open his eyes.  I started crying.

My mother told me, “Don’t cry, don’t be sad, we will get him a doctor”.

A doctor nearby examined Chinthu carefully and told, “This puppy had got a nervous complaint that is not likely to be cured”.

But we were not willing to lose him.

We brought him home, put him on his carpet bed, wrapped him with a blanket and I remember, during that whole night I was crying, taking him in my lap and soothing his forehead with my fingers.

The next morning, to our great surprise and relief, he opened his eyes. But he could not lift his head.

My mother took some hot milk in a feeding bottle and put the nipple in his mouth.  After a moment he started sucking.  We relieved a lot.

Then day after day his condition was getting better.  I was always near to him, trying to get him stand on his own feet.  After a long one month, he made it up, to stand on his own feet; even if not so stable.  

After three months, he had become almost alright.  He lived with me and my family for eight years.  When he died at last, me with my mother and my girl friend was near to him.  Still his pictures are there in my show case, just among the other members of my family.

My raw food diet

For the past one and a half years, I am having raw food for my diet. I will tell you the history which led me to this cool diet.

I was suffering from a sort of eczema on my toes for three or more years. I treated it with many, and all of them were allopathic treatments. One day, one of my friends advised me to try homoeopathic treatment and suggested one good homoeo doctor near to my locality. At that time, my problem had become so worse that I could not even walk steadily. Desperately, I consulted that homoeo doctor, and he promised me to get me recovered from my problem, but I have to strictly follow his directions. I was ready to agree for anything.

The doctor suggested me that he was not giving me any medicines right then. He told me that most of the skin problems occur just because of inappropriate diet, and the first thing to do is to prepare my body to accept the medicines. He asked me to follow a particular diet for some weeks.

Actually, it was not so easy to follow the diet he suggested. First day I had to clean my stomach with the help of castor oil and could have only plain water for that entire day. Next day I could have raw vegetables, vegetable soup and tender coconut water. On the third day I could have some cooked vegetables and a cup of plain rice. On the fourth day again I had to clean the stomach and the same routine to be repeated.

On the first week it was very difficult to follow the diet but on the thought of getting out of my skin decease, I strictly followed the same for the next three months as directed by the doctor. Then only he prescribed me some medicines for the next two months and suggested to have only vegetarian food during the period. And, to my best relief, I was out of my skin decease and it didn’t appear again.

I have told you that I was on a diet of vegetables and especially of raw vegetables during the course of the treatment. Earlier, I was a person who liked to have meat, fish, etc. At that time, I sometimes felt constipation and some sorts of food annoyed my digestive system. But when I was on raw food, I felt peace with my stomach, and I felt my body had become cooler. I am living in a tropical country, and when I felt the inner coolness, I liked it very much. So, even after the treatment, I decided to follow the diet of raw food.

I studied books written by the promoters of raw food, and their experiences with raw food diet, and for better I approached a Naturopathic Centre, situated at Varkala, near Trivandrum, Kerala, India.

The physicians there advised me for how to be able to live on raw food without losing energy and they suggested me a weekly diet with 90% of raw food. Thus for the past one and a half years, I am living on raw food, especially on raw vegetables and germinated seeds. For fresh vegetables, I started to nurture a small vegetable garden in my backyard.

Now I am having a cup of milk (the physicians advised me to have one glass of milk in the morning) and then some raw vegetables for breakfast; some salads with germinated seeds, sometimes with a cup of curd for lunch, and for dinner, fresh and dry fruits. And you know, I received a basket of fresh fruits from my girl friend as my birthday gift last year. I think I am having a royal life now, and as discovered by my best friends, my overall behavior itself has become softened after I started to follow this diet. I suggest everybody to follow the diet of raw food and feel the difference of living a cooler life in mind and body.
